These are all magazine covers, and they all have similarities and differences.
A example of some differences would be, they are each aimed at different audience such as the vogue magazine would be aimed at people interested in fashion whereas the national geographic magazine would be aimed at people more interested in geographical information.
A example of some similarities between these magazines is even though they are each based on different things they are still made for entertainment purposes and people could be interested in reading more then one of them.
These magazines are similar because they are both sport magazines but one is aimed at men and one is aimed at woman. They would both have similar content just adapted to the different genders.

People read magazines for reasons such as entertainment and escapism. For example someone would read a magazine on a plane to take their mind off the flight. Or someone might read one out of boredom.

Another similarity would be they both use bold fonts to attract the reader to the titles. Some differences would be that each magazine is based on different things. Another difference would be the layout of the magazines, the one on the left is more sleek whereas the one on the right is more bright and filled up with writing
from completing this task i have learnt that different magazines can be about certain things but still can have the same layout. Also the images are usually the main part of a double page spread.
Looking at different fashion magazine covers
These are both fashion magazine covers, one for woman and one for men. Both mastheads are in a bold font so that they standout to the reader, there color themes are quite similar, both including black and white. Both magazines are using direct address to connect with the reader. The magazine with Justin Timberlake on the cover has got a strap line whereas the other one does not. These magazines are both about fashion but one is aimed at a young male adults and the other is aimed at a younger female audience. They wouldn't necessarily have the same audience. The style of the female magazine is more sleek and would attract girls to read where as the Mens fashion magazine is designed to be attractive to a male audience. The genre of both magazines is clear to the audience because they both have 'fashion' in their mastheads which makes it clear to the audience what it is about.
From this task i have learnt magazine company's use different styles and layouts that will attract their targeted audience, also they use words on the cover to make people interested in purchasing and reading the magazine.
Target audience of woman's fashion magazine covers
The target audience of this magazine would be young female adults. One way this as been show is on the cover of the magazine it says 'How much sex is normal' which wouldn't be written on a magazine for younger readers. Another way this is shown is most of the things written on the cover wouldn't be suitable for a younger audience. This magazine and double page spread would tell us about the audience as it would be bought by people interested in what it is about. Some things it would tell us would be.

- interested in Rita Ora
- Want to know more about what is written on the cover
- 'The big fashion issue' would be interesting to a younger audience because they would want to see what is good and bad fashion

This magazine and double page spread is similar to the other one where its target audience would be younger females. Ways this is suggested would be on the cover is Ariana Grande who is a young singer popular to a younger audience of girls, so this would attract them to read it. In the double page spread it talks about make up which is also very popular to a teenage audience.
This paragraph shows that the audience is going to be younger girls because it talks about Ariana's style. It also talks about her signature look and how they are going to change it for this magazine cover.
- The text 'summer style' suggests its showing Ariana's style throughout the magazine which would interest younger girls.
- Also it says 'how to detox your wardrobe' which people may be interested in if they like her style.

From this task i have learnt that fashion magazines make it very clear who the target audience is. They do this by having popular celebrities on the covers who are popular within a genre. This will draw the target audience to this magazine because they will want to read more.
Digital Magazines vs Print Magazines
- Digital magazines are harder to sell, because they can easily be found online for free, this is negative for the institution
- Digital magazines are more modern which could be attractive to the audience, but some readers may prefer an old fashioned approach and psychically have the magazine to read
- Because it is online, readers can select what they want to read instead of buying the whole magazine.
- You have to have a wifi connection to have a digital magazine
- Some adverts that may come up could distract you when reading
- Digital magazines can be easier to access for some people who wouldn't want to travel or go out to buy one

From completing this task, I have learnt that magazines can have positive and negative for the readers and a print out magazine will most likely attract an older audience whereas a digital magazine would more likely attract a younger audience because it is easier for anyone to access with a mobile phone, ipad etc.

The layout of this digital magazine is quite simple, the masthead is in the left corner and smaller then it would normally be on a print magazine. Digital magazines such as this one are different to print magazines, they are more simple and don't feature things such as puffs or strap lines, a reason for this would be because they have links on the first page that take you straight to the section of the magazine which you would normally get hints about on a print out cover. The cover to this digital magazine includes one main photo in the centre of the page/screen, this could be to get the readers attention. Along the top it has got sections that say,

In the article after the first page, it talks about the person on the covers history with vogue - 'As Giselle takes to her 14th cover, we re imagine the creations of Lee McQueen with unprecedented access to his illustrious archive ahead of the V&A's "Savage Beauty" exhibition.' This is good to include at the start because it gives the reader an insight about the model on the cover. The magazine talking about the cover on the first page it helps to address the reader and let them have a clear understanding about the magazine. On the second page it has rhetorical questions which were asked to the model but her answers aren't shown, which would make the reader want to find out and carry on with the magazine. ​ Digital magazines appeal to the audience for reasons such as they can be easier for some people to access if they don't want to physically go out to purchase the magazine. Another reason would be they can include what you prefer to read instead of having many different things included in them. A limitation of digital magazines would be that people who do not have phones or internet connection cannot access them. Another limitation would be they can be hard to read and could require zooming in and out. Digital magazines allow for a lot of flexibility in the content that can be shared. When creating digital magazines it is easy to change the number of pages while leaving the layout and format of the magazine as is. This is impossible with a printed version. Publishers are able to go much farther than just image and word based content. With digital magazines it is possible to include video, flash, and images which help draw in readers in a whole new way. Geographic barriers are eliminated with the introduction of digital magazines and this is nontrivial because managing readers and subscribers from other countries is incredibly difficult to do with print editions. Additionally, digital publications ensure that there is continuity in when readers are receiving their subscription. Beyond that digital magazines help with advertising by offering advertisers the analytics of the number of clicks users had on different advertisements. Publishers are able to understand their subscribers better with the interactive online mediums and the two way communication process. The result of this is future content can be revised to better suit a publishers readers.

This vogue magazine has a classic layout, with a masthead across the top in a bigger more attention grabbing font, smaller text around the photo to hint what the magazine includes and strap line at the bottom which says ' Cara Delevigne stars in vogue's royal wedding salute'. This shows that the magazine includes factors to do with the royal wedding and because it is a fashion magazine this could be what they think the wedding dress looks like. Print magazine are more detailed then digital magazines because they want the reader to be gravitated towards their magazine instead of a different brands, so companies will do things such as getting the most popular celebrity at that moment in time on the cover to attract people to buy it, or they will put in news stories / fashion stories that are relevant or popular. The company addresses the audience by talking about relevant stories at the time it is written and sold.
The person on the cover would normally have a double page spread about them inside as some readers would of bought the magazine because of who is on the cover. The layout of this double page spread is quite simple, with the models name at the top in a big bold font, and then a paragraph about her style and how she was model of the year. This would interest people who like modelling or are a fan of the model featured. The colour scheme is just black and white with a coloured photo which is simple to read which readers would like. The direct address also would attract the reader.
From completing this task i have learnt that most print magazines have a double page spread that relates to the model on the front cover, also print magazines use a more detailed style to attract readers.
This magazine cover has got a masthead in a bright colour which would grab the readers attention. It has got a lot of text all over the cover based on Rita Ora and fashion. This is a good way of showing people what the magazine is about. The colour used is also quite 'girly' which shows the target audience would be girls. A magazine company such as Cosmopolitan targets a female demographic with similar content based on female interests. The target audience of this magazine would be younger females, some things that tell me this are, the cover talks about sex which wouldn't be appropriate for a very young audience. Also the celebrity on the cover is popular with the younger generation because she featured in TV programs when they were younger, this is good marketing because it would mean this generation recognise her and could want to see what she is doing now. Also on the cover of this magazine it says ' The first thing he notices about you ' this shows the target audience is 16+ because it isn't as relevant to a younger audience. Just like any other media product, a magazine’s aim is to make money. Unlike print copies, the online magazine is not making any profit from selling content to readers. Although, just like the print versions, the majority of profit is made through advertising. Whilst print magazines will have a target audience and some knowledge of readership based on consumer research, it is much easier for the online magazines to track their readership, produce data and share that data with advertisers to prove that placements of adverts is profitable for both parties.

This digital magazine has got a simple layout which makes it easier for the readers to understand. It has got a large title explaining what the article is about. It is based on youtube scandals which is popular with the age group this magazine is aimed at (16+) as youtube is a popular website that people use.
This paragraph is a introduction and talks about how youtube scandals are the most popular thing to happen on youtube in 2018. This interests the target audience because these youtubers are popular with younger age groups. Also cosmopolitan is aimed at girls and all of these people in the image specialize in make up which girls tend to be more interested in.
Sell lines are used to grab the reader’s attention, this one is very straight to the point, it is talking about a racism.
This part is giving the audience information about the story. It's talking about a famous youtuber's scandal and ho their apology was seen as 'fake' which would attract people to read as they would want to find out what is going on.
In this online example from Cosmopolitan we see numerous opportunities for advertisers. The shampoo pop up advert sits to the side of this article on ‘The 11 biggest Youtube beauty scandals ’ with no apparent direct relationship other than that both are targeting the female consumer. Whereas, there are more aggressive methods of advertising placed within the article itself with a another article based on Jeffree Star (one of the people to do with the original magazine story) placed to the right of it .

When analysing the purpose of the fashion magazine genre specifically, it has become clear that the articles intentions are to connect the reader with the opportunity to achieve that style as quickly as possible. If this is the case then online platforms are definitely at an advantage due to our convergence culture. Magazine companies will do things such as showing a models' outfit and then putting all the clothes she is wearing next to her with the brand and price. This is a good strategy because it is almost a form of advertising for the other companies which will bring them money as well.
At the bottom of the page it has a section which is called 'Editors picks' which shows a selection of make up products that have been selected by their staff and recommended. This is another form of advertisement from the other products.
These subheadings are helpful and make it easier for a reader to find a magazine more suited to them.
